The students of the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology staged a demonstration by blocking the Chattogram-Kaptai highway near their institution under Raujan upazila in the district for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, protesting at the deaths of their two fellows in a road accident.

Students started their protests at 10:00am blocking the highway and chanting slogans demanding justice for their fellows, the arrest of the bus driver and his assistants, and their exemplary punishment.

Police arrested the accused driver of the bus, which killed two students of the Civil Engineering Department of the university in the accident at the Selina Kader Chowdhury crossing under Rangunia upazila in Chattogram on Monday.

The arrested was identified as M Tajul Islam, 49, hailing from Raujan.

Rangunia police station officer-in-charge Chandan Kumar said that they arrested the driver around 1:30 pm in the Kotwali area.

The bus, which killed two students, Shahta Saha, 21, and Towfiq Hossain, 20, did not have a fitness certificate, while other necessary documents had their validity expired.

Students placed a nine-point demand, including proper compensation to the victims’ families by the bus authority, cancellation of all local bus services, establishment of a modern medical centre on the CUET campus, construction of a four-lane highway from Chattogram to Kaptai, increasing the number of traffic boxes, and confirmation of all road safety and speed controls.

A student who was injured in the accident is out of danger now but still under observation at Evercare Hospital.
